SIP trunking is a service offered by an Internet Telephony Service Provider (ITSP) that converges voice and data onto one communication line, providing seamless access between the Internet and the worldwide Public-Switched Telephone Network.
There are four components necessary to successfully deploy SIP trunking: a PBX with a SIP-enabled trunk side, an enterprise edge device understanding SIP, an Internet telephony or SIP trunking service provider, and the Public Switched Telephone Network.
A major aspect of VoIP technology is SIP and SIP trunking. In this post, we are going to tell you what SIP is and how it relates to SIP trunking. We are also going to discribe how SIP trunking works and show you the difference between hosted PBX and non-hosted PBX SIP trunking.
What Does SIP Stand For?
So what is SIP? SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol, and that’s exactly what it is. It’s a type of protocol that initiates a session over the Internet.
IP-PBX and hosted PBX systems work in two very different ways from a SIP trunking standpoint. Both technologies interact differently with the Private Branch Exchange (PBX), Public-Switched Telephone Network, Internet Telephony Service Provider, and the Enterprise Boarder Element (EDGE).
