Here are some important items to consider when choosing a business VoIP phone system.
Is it Scalable?
Scalability is very important. Make sure that the phone system allows you to easily add and remove users. Companies add and remove employees all the time, make sure your phone system can easily adapt to this change. Hosted VoIP phone systems are great for this because users can be added or removed at will.
Is it VoIP Based?
Business VoIP phone systems are all the rage these days. They offer more features and are less expensive than analogue phone systems. In this writer’s opinion, stay away from buying a non-VoIP phone system. The technology is outdated and the VoIP options available today are far superior.

Hosted VoIP PBX business VoIP service and other forms of unified communication are making it increasingly easy for workers to accomplish their duties via mobile device.
Whether using hosted VoIP PBX, another form of business VoIP, or some other service supporting a UC device, the sheer size of the predicted mobile worker base is astounding.
IDC supplied the following information in a recent statement. Essentially, mobile workers are predicted to reach a shocking 1.2 billion by the end of 2010. But be careful to pay attention to the regional growth.
The driving force behind the growth is the emerging markets of Asia/Pacific and the regions use of unified communications (UC) technologies. According to the analysts, the mobile workforces in the U.S. and Europe have peaked. The U.S. is described as having a highly concentrated mobile workforce, but that by 2013 over 75 percent of workers will be described as mobile in some way–that’s 129 million people. Compare that to Asia/Pacific figures, and you’ll see why IDC is saying the real action won’t be in the U.S. By 2013, about 37 percent of Asia/Pacific workers will be described as mobile, and before you say that percentage sounds smaller, it is actually 734.5 million people!

Unified communications is not a new term in telecommunications. But as time goes on it seems that more and more technologies are falling into this aggregate category. So what is unified communications? When someone refers to unified communications what are they really saying?
Definition of Unified Communications
According to the International Engineering Consortium, unified communications is an industry term used to describe all forms of call and multimedia/cross-media message-management functions controlled by an individual user for both business and social purposes. This includes any enterprise informational or transactional application process that emulates a human user and uses a single, content-independent personal messaging channel (mailbox) for contact access.

Some interesting news was just released today; Broadsoft and Polycom are teaming up to deliver an integrated unified communications platform. Here is what it’s all about.
Essentially, the new platform, known as V2Connet, brings together Polycom’s Open Collaboration Network and Broadsofts Broadworks VoIP application platform. The goal of this business VoIP focused endeavor is to create a combined offering, giving service providers a unified voice and video solution in a hosted service. Not a bad idea, right? So I saw Avatar last night. I must say that is was an awesome movie. But I couldn’t help but think to myself, “What if an Avatar character was in a vicious fight with business VoIP, who would win?” Here is what I came up with…
Call Quality
Now avatars have that little thing in their hair which allows them to communicate with all living things. The connection seems very secure and reliable, which is good.

I’ve noticed that there are two terms floating around which mean the same thing, hosted IP PBX and hosted VoIP PBX. But which is better? Let’s get to the bottom of this now.
Why call it Hosted VoIP PBX?
Hosted VoIP PBX has been the accepted term for some time now. It’s established, people know it and it has VoIP in it. Now VoIP obviously stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. So it suggests within the term that one of them main purposes of this system is to project your voice over the Internet.

As hosted VoIP PBX fans we love Internet and tech news. So in this vein, we get jazzed about releases from giants like Google.
On 12/03/2009, Google announced the release of a new tool, Google Public DNS, and it has all of us fidgeting in our seats.
So what is it! Well, without getting too technical, DNS means Domain Name System. DNS is an important part of a hosted VoIP phone system. A hosted PBX phone, like those used with FreedomIQ, use DNS to resolve the address associated with the servers that the phones register with. While it is important in hosted VoIP PBX, it is also a very important for the Internet as a whole.

Google Chrome OS & Hosted VoIP
Google ChromeOS is innovative, cool, and attracting tons of hype. But what we’re really interested in is its implications for hosted VoIP PBX.
Google ChromeOS is simply an Internet based operating system so it really doesn’t have many repercussions for hosted VoIP. The quality of a hosted VoIP phone service is much more dependent on the service provider, Internet connection, and VoIP phones being utilized. While this is true, Google ChromeOS and the Google Chrome browser could affect hosted VoIP PBX systems in specific ways.

According to market research firm Infonetics Research, the VoIP market grew by a startling $20.7 billion in the first half of 2009. But what is really amazing is the expected growth in the hosted VoIP PBX sector.
Here is a quote from Diane Myers, directing analyst for service provider VoIP and IMS at Infonetics Research.
“Demand for residential and business VoIP services continues to grow even as spending in other communication areas tightens. For the first half of 2009, the worldwide VoIP services market grew to $20.7 billion. Residential VoIP services remain healthy, comprising the majority of worldwide VoIP services revenue, and subscribers are up 14% from the end of 2008. On the business VoIP side, while managed IP PBX revenue growth has slowed in line with IP PBX shipments, we are expecting IP Centrex and hosted UC service revenue to grow 26% year-over-year in 2009.”

SIP trunking is a service offered by an Internet Telephony Service Provider (ITSP) that converges voice and data onto one communication line, providing seamless access between the Internet and the worldwide Public-Switched Telephone Network.
There are four components necessary to successfully deploy SIP trunking: a PBX with a SIP-enabled trunk side, an enterprise edge device understanding SIP, an Internet telephony or SIP trunking service provider, and the Public Switched Telephone Network.

A major aspect of VoIP technology is SIP and SIP trunking. In this post, we are going to tell you what SIP is and how it relates to SIP trunking. We are also going to discribe how SIP trunking works and show you the difference between hosted PBX and non-hosted PBX SIP trunking.
What is SIP?
What Does SIP Stand For?
So what is SIP? SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol, and that’s exactly what it is. It’s a type of protocol that initiates a session over the Internet.

As Google Voice approaches the point of being available to the masses, it’s garnering a lot of attention from mobile and hosted VoIP nuts (like me). In case you haven’t been following along as closely, Google Voice is a repackaged and retooled version of GrandCentral, a free “one number” VoIP voicemail service that Google bought while still in Beta testing back in July of 2007.
In the two years that have passed since the acquisition, however, Google has done a less than stellar job of maintaining this phone service and the droves of testers it inherited. New invitations were frozen, and the support forums became a barren wasteland devoid of developer response. At the beginning of this year, the gauntlet was finally thrown down by Judi Sohn of Salon.com, saying what everyone else was thinking.
Fast forward to now, and you have Google Voice finally on the diving board, ready to make a splash. But the question on the mind of many in the VoIP industry is, “is it too late?”
