We talk about cloud – or we read it and hear it talked about all the time. What’s the big deal about cloud?

Cloud is about high availability of applications. Like your smartphones demonstrate most effectively, cloud is about mobility, flexibility, virtual offices and remote working.
At its essence cloud is about being able to access any application – voice is just an application – from any authorized device that has access.
Megacommute vs Telecommute
I recently wrote about why Yahoo! is making a mistake ending their telecommuting program, so I wasn’t planning on writing another post about telecommuting post until the US Census Bureau announced that there are about 600,000 “megacommuters” in the US. A commute crosses the threshold from normal to “mega” once it reaches the 50 mile mark and takes at least 90 minutes; that’s at least 100 miles and three hours of commuting time every work day. Come on, America. That’s crazy!

Yahoo Making a Mistake by Ending Telecommuting
Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo, has reportedly sent a memo to all of her remote employees stating that they can either relocate to an office … or quit! For Mayer, a 30-something CEO of a tech company, to demand this is shocking. After all, aren’t business owners striving to make life easier for their customers? Why, then, would a CEO make it harder on her employees?
It’s not like working remotely hinders performance – hell, studies have shown the opposite to be true.
Technologies like hosted VoIP phone systems and cloud computing make it easy and cost-effective to let employees work from home – where they are happier, more comfortable, save money on commuting and have actually proven to work longer hours.

According to new research, telecommuting is increasing globally. Channel Partners notes that telecommuting will be a burden for the SMB space:
“The increase of mobile workers also brings a number of concerns for SMBs, such as the cost of solutions that support mobile workers and security from theft and data privacy. Other concerns include mobile-data pricing, transaction security and mobile device pricing.”
